Multi-Agency Emergency Response Exercise at Victoria International Airport Sept 29

Aug 16, 2016

On Thursday, September 29th from approximately 9:00am – 12:00 pm, Victoria Airport Authority (VAA) is hosting a full-scale training exercise to simulate an aircraft accident at Victoria International Airport. Regular airport operations will proceed as normal, but passengers or members of the public will notice a significant presence of emergency services on-site.

Volunteers will be at the accident site simulating injured passengers and others will play the role of family and friends in the terminal building.  Everyone participating in the exercise will be clearly identified and notice of the event will be shared on our social media channels and public address system.

Participating agencies include the VAA Fire Service, VAA Airport Security, NAV Canada, local airlines, terminal building tenants, Sidney RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, British Columbia Coroners Service, Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA), OCC Westshore RCMP – 911 Dispatch, Sidney Fire Department, North Saanich Fire Department, Central Saanich Fire Department, Saanich Fire Department, Saanich Fire Dispatch and British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) Dispatch Centre Victoria.

“Periodic testing of our emergency response plan is a critical component of our safety management system,” said Geoff Dickson, VAA President and CEO.  “During the live exercise, airport operations and flight schedules will be unaffected, however the public may see emergency responders and related organizations practicing both inside and outside the main terminal building.”

Regular testing of Emergency Response Plans and training for all local response agencies is essential to the VAA’s emergency preparedness and, Transport Canada regulations require that these types of exercises be conducted every four years.
