Victoria International Airport Recognized as Lowest Cost Per Passenger in Global Study
Jul 31, 2014
The Air Transport Research Society’s 2014 Global Airport Benchmarking Report has identified Victoria International Airport (YYJ) as the lowest cost per enplaned passenger of the 12 major airports studied in Canada. The report also found that YYJ generated the highest percentage of its total revenue from non-aviation revenue which is derived from concessions such as restaurants, retail and land rents.
"It is extremely important to us to be a low cost airport because we recognize that profit margins in the airline industry are thin, and this allows them to keep their prices down. At the same time, we have been able to execute our capital programs and deliver a world-class facility,” said Geoff Dickson, President and CEO of the Victoria Airport Authority.
The Air Transport Research Society (ATRS) was established in 1995 in Sydney, Australia, with its headquarters located at UBC’s Sauder School of Business. Professor Tae Oum of Sauder School has been a past-President of ATRS, and Chairman since 2013. In 2000, Professor Oum and 14 international ATRS members founded the Global Airport Performance Benchmarking Task Force, with the first Global Airport Benchmarking Report being released in 2002. The report has been published annually since that time.
In the most recent report, 200 airports and 26 airport groups from around the world were studied, including 12 from Canada and 66 from the United States. The 2014 ATRS Airport Benchmarking Report was released at the ATRS World Conference held in Bordeaux, France from July 17 to 20, 2014.
