A New Bike and Walking Trail for Victoria Airport

May 1, 2012

The Victoria Airport Authority is pleased to announce a project that will see the creation of a 9.3 km bike and walking path around the airport lands.

Construction of the path is underway and will see the area from Ocean Avenue to Mills Road and West Saanich Road completed in 2012.   It is anticipated that 80 percent of the path will be completed in 2012, with the final section to be completed in 2013.

“We think this is a great opportunity not only for the residents of the community, employees of the airport and  surrounding businesses to come out and enjoy the Airport Trail, we believe it will be a draw for residents of the broader region to visit to the Peninsula“, said VAA President and CEO Geoff Dickson.

“Developing an airport with a focus on sustainability is a key goal for the Victoria Airport Authority. The Airport is proud of its commitment to environment stewardship. Some of the sustainability initiatives on airport lands include protecting our forests, enhancing our farm fields, reducing electrical consumption, implementing rain water management practices, utilizing geo-thermal heating, installing solar heating panels, undertaking extensive habitat restoration and increasing transit service.”

Victoria International Airport is one of the first airports in the world to host this type of recreational facility.
