Submit Safety Concern
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets out the rules that govern civil aviation worldwide. Canada is a member state of the organization and Transport Canada has adopted its recommendations, most specifically those regarding safety management systems at civilian airports. This systematic approach to safety starts with a clear policy expressing commitment to safe management practices. It involves identifying areas of risk and creating a systematic plan to address and minimize those hazards. There is also a commitment to investigate all accidents and incidents; to collect data from the investigations and to ensure that all personnel receive the training they require. The system builds in a means of assessing safety performance against the safety goals that have been set, thus ensuring continuous improvement. What it means to the VAA is that instead of looking to government for a formulation of safety rules and regulations, we are taking a greater degree of ownership by determining risks specific to this site and doing the best we can to minimize them.
