The VAA installs portable defibrillators in terminal building

September 1, 2005

Today, the Victoria Airport Authority installed two portable Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) inside the Air Terminal Building.

One is located in the Lower Holdroom and the other outside of the airport restaurant.

An AED is a small, portable device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and prompts the user to deliver a defibrillation shock if it determines one is needed.

AEDs are specially designed for easy use by a "first responder", who would be the first person to typically arrive on the scene of a medical emergency. At the Victoria International Airport our Airport Firehall, Security Commissionaires, and several airport employees have been trained in the use of the equipment.  The machines are also available to the public and can be used even if someone has no training.  Once turned on, the AED guides the user through each step of the defibrillation process by providing voice prompts.
