Victoria Airport Launches Electric Vehicle Charging

Mar 11, 2016

Victoria Airport Authority has installed three new Sun Country Level 2 charging stations.  Each new station has two connections for vehicles, which allows for up to six electric vehicles to be charged in total.  VAA has four dedicated charging spots in the long term parking lot and two in the short term parking lot.  There are no additional fees to use the stations outside of the standard parking rates charged for the lot.  The short term lot is only $1 to park for up to two hours, so it’s very easy for people to come and get a quick charge when picking up passengers.  As part of the project to install the charging stations, the VAA has installed the required electrical infrastructure to install additional chargers in the parking lots.  The VAA will monitor the usage of the new stations and assess when to install more as it is expected that demand for electric vehicle charging will increase in the future.

“With the introduction of electric vehicle charging stations in both our parking lots, electric vehicle users can feel confident that they can get a charge while at the airport,” said James Bogusz, Vice President, Operations & Development.  “We have installed additional underground infrastructure to accommodate future charging stations and will monitor the usage of the stations to ensure we keep pace with demand.”

The VAA would like to extend a special thank you to Jim Hindson from the Victoria EV Club for his assistance in the planning of signage and requirements for electric vehicles.  The electrical engineer for the project was Raj Atwal of PBX Engineering, with operational support provided by VAA staff.  The total value of the project, including all of the required infrastructure for future charging stations was approximately 100K.  The VAA has plans to increase the size of the long term parking lot later this year which will add over 300 new parking spots, with additional vehicle charging stations being considered.
